Based on age, I would guess that the metal is in the 19-20 gauge range. I use 18 gauge cold rolled on all of my older model sheet work-a 4' X 10' sheet really isn't that expensive if you look around (usually in the $35-50 range) I'll be mig welding new sheet metal to the floor and some frame work also.
